Painted Dog Conservation is a private voluntary organisation based out in Zimbabwe and dedicated to saving painted dogs aka African wild dogs from extinction. They are committed to creating an environment where the endangered painted dogs can thrive. To that effect, they have developed a conservation model built on research, direct protection (anti-poaching units), education, local community involvement and international support. At the turn of the 20th century Africa had a population of 500,000 painted dogs and today only less 7000 remain in the wild. Threats to painted dogs include poaching, loss of quality habitat, diseases, road kills and there is evidence from recent research that climate change is impacting the dogs, specifically pup survivorship.
